Launched in 2011, the project design teams were established to provide UCSD undergraduates with the opportunity to participate in hands-on medical technology design projects. Our teams are open to all majors and students can apply each year to be placed on a team.
Working in collaboration with the UCSD Center for AIDS Research, we are designing cost-effective lab equipment to run an HIV treatment analysis assay in resource limited settings. This nucleic acid test is used to detect drug resistant forms of HIV. By introducing methods of treatment surveillance to the developing world, we hope to contain the spread of drug-resistant forms of HIV and preserve second and third lines of anti-retroviral medication.
